We at Phirald Tours & Travel Ltd, would love to take you to Mt. Elgon National Park on the Uganda-Kenya border.
The park earned its name from Mountain Elgon, a historical mountain with the world’s largest caldera and an extinct shield volcano that erupted approximately twenty-four million years ago.
Come along with us as we travel 235 kilometres from Kampala to eastern Uganda. Mount Elgon National Park has the largest surface area of any extinct volcano in the world, with a 4,321-metre peak that ranks sixth in Africa.
Uganda represents for 1,110 km2 of the park’s total surface area of 1,279 km2, while Kenya comprises for 169 km2.
Elephants, buffalo, and numerous antelopes abound, not to mention primates like as the black and white Colubus monkey, which may be found in the park’s deepest highlands. The park is particularly rich in birdlife, with 300 bird species including the Tacazze sunbird and the Lammergeier.
Aside from reaching the summit, ascending Mt. Elgon allows you to sightsee a large caldera, gorges, hot springs, mesas, waterfalls, and cliffs.
Locals such as Sabiny and Bagisu are bound to be met while visiting. The Bagisu speak Lumasaba, a native dialect, as do the Sabiny, who speak Nilotic Sebei Sabin. The Bagisu perceive the mountain to be a revelation from their founding father, “Masaba.” For survival, both tribes here practice subsistence farming.
Mt. Elgon has some of the most fascinating hiking trails in East Africa, allowing visitors to enjoy the scenery without distraction. The length and difficulty of three of the main hiking trails vary.
This unique park is home to over 300 different bird species and has been classified as an Important Bird Area (IBA).
Tourists are sure to get up close and personal with the African goshawk, cinnamon-chested bee eater, and African blue flycatcher on the mountain.
Bird enthusiasts should keep a look out for endangered species such as the lammergeier.
