Fort Portal is a popular tourist destination known as the “Jewel of the Pearl” and the only place in the world ruled by a young monarch. The only place in Uganda where you come close to dazzling 50 crater lakes located both in the northern and southern parts of the city in the Tooro Kingdom, as well as the roaring Nyakasura waterfalls and Amabeere Ga Nyina Mwiru caves, among other exciting features. Fort Portal is 295 kilometres away from Kampala, which is a 4-and-a-half-hour drive.
In honor of Sir Gerald Portal, a former British commissioner for Uganda in the 1890s, whose statue greets you on the main road, Fort Portal is located between the Kabarole district and the Tooro kingdom. The Rwenzori Mountains, Kibale National Park, Queen Elizabeth, and Semuliki National Park surround this distinctive city.
This vibrant city’s topography is planned with gorgeous sights of 400-meter-deep crater lakes, which are breathtaking and seductive in their natural beauty.
This tourist city is irresistibly packaged with a variety of attractions, wonderful weather, friendly locals, a rich cultural heritage, and enchanting crater lakes, among other features that make it the ideal holiday spot for both domestic and foreign visitors.
Go to see the Nyakasura waterfalls and the Amabeere Ga Nyinamwiru caverns, which are about five kilometers from Fort Portal on Bundibugyo Road. The caves get their name from the daughter of a local Tooro king at the time, Bukuku, who had his daughter’s breasts amputated in order to make her undesirable to men. However, his plan was foiled as she kept alluring men, and she thus became pregnant for the Batembuzi king Isaza and later gave birth to their son, Ndahura. As a result of the cut-off breasts, she couldn’t breastfeed and instead fed the baby with what appeared to be milk dripping from stalactites; the calcium in the milk gave it a creamy appearance. Ndahura went ahead and tried to fulfill a prophecy that he would become king and take over Bukuku’s throne, a throne that was rightfully Isaza’s. Ndahura formed one of the greatest empires of the Great Lakes African area.
Great hikers will need to challenge their feet as they summit Kyeganywa Hill, which is flanked by Lake Nyabikere, Saaka, and Kigere.
Fort Portal is indisputably a destination with a fusion of beautiful natural scenery, culture, adventure, beauty, leisure, and hospitality. The Karuzika Palace, which overlooks the city and residence to King Oyo, is well worth a visit thanks to its 360-degree panoramas.
