Between Kampala and the western Ugandan protected regions, Lake Mburo is a great place to unwind and stop for a few nights. The park comprises forests, rock outcrops, acacia, savanna, forest, bush, lakes, and swamps, and it is also made up of a mosaic of habitats that are home to a variety of wildlife species that are not commonly found in other national parks. You can explore a variety of well-represented bird species while here.
In addition to providing spectacular game drives, tourists can enjoy horseback riding, boat cruises, walking tours, and mountain biking.
This park, which is the smallest of Uganda’s ten national parks with a total area of about 370 square kilometres, is also among the most diverse in terms of wildlife, with 332 different bird species and 69 different mammal species.
The only park where zebra and eland species can be found Rothschild’s giraffes, leopards, hyenas, and a few lions are additionally accessible. The park’s five lakes are home to hippopotamuses and crocodiles, while the surrounding wetlands conceal elusive wetland animals like the sitatunga antelope.
Other “swamp specialties” on the park’s bird list include the shoebill, papyrus gonolek, papyrus yellow warbler, and white-winged warbler.
In close proximity to the main south-west route that connects Kampala to Bwindi, Kabale, and the Rwandan border, Lake Mburo is situated between the cities of Masaka and Mbarara. A 3–4 hour trip over the Masaka–Mbarara route separates it from Kampala, the capital of Uganda. Moreover, the park is reachable from Kibale National Park, via Ibanda and Rushere, and from Queen Elizabeth National Park, via Ishaka and Mbarara.
